Arne Jacobsen intended the organic shape of this chair as a contrast to the straight lines and rectangular shapes of the hotel building. The sculptural shape of the Egg chair was made possible by the use of the then brand new technology of a foam shell covered with upholstery. Arne Jasobsen was the first to use this technology.
The Egg armchair is now manufactured under exclusive licence by the Danish brand Fritz Hansen and is available in many upholstery designs in a variety of fabrics, including the popular Kvadrat fabrics, as well as in top quality leather.
Along with the Egg chair, Arne Jasobsen created other follow-up, now iconic furniture collections for the SAS Royal Hotel: Swan, Series 3000 and Drop. With this furniture, Arne Jacobsen made Danish design history around the world.
