George Nelson, a graduate of architecture at the prestigious Yale University, was best known in Europe for his architectural designs and as a leading figure in the modernist movement. In the USA, he became known first as an editor at the Architectural Forum and especially as a design director at the furniture company Herman Miller, where he became a key figure in American design at the time.
Prior to working with the Vitra brand in the 1950s, Nelson ran his own design office, which created some of the well-known turn-of-the-century designs. The Vitra portfolio included the unforgettable Vitra Wall Clock from Nelson's pen, as well as the Marshmallow Sofa and, of course, the iconic Coconut Chair.
