The Atlas collection from New Works is full of historical influences and references. It is named after the mythical Titan condemned to hold up the heavens on his shoulders. Likewise, the solid wooden legs stand strongly as support for the seat. Designer John Astbury was inspired by several architectural elements and styles when designing it. In this brutalist piece, we can also see the influence of archetypal post-and-lintel construction. Combined with simple geometry, the circle and the square, it is the primary archetype that together creates the stool’s character and composition.
