Arne Jacobsen was born on Febuary 11th, 1902 in Copenhagen into the family of a businessman and a bank clerk. Young Arne first wanted to become a painter, but his father persuaded him to study architecture, where his future could be more secure. From 1924 to 1927 he studied the Architecture School at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Later he founded his own design studio and quickly became very succesful in the field of design and architecture. He cooperated with Hans Wegner or Verner Panton.
As a designer, he created designs and prototypes of furniture, textiles, wallpaper, cutlery, etc. His best-known furniture designs include the stackable Ant and Series 7 chairs, Grand Prix chairs and one must not exclude the furniture he designed for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen: Drop collection, Egg Chair and Swan Chair. Equally famous are his Bellevue lamps or Mayor Sofa.
His architectural works include the Bellavista apartment buildings in Klampenborg, the Bellevue Theater, Aarhus City Hall (in collaboration with Erik Møller), Søllerød City Hall (in collaboration with Flemming Lassen), Glostrup City Hall andpreviously mentioned SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen.
He had a large number of projects in progress, such as the town hall in Mainz, Germany, the Danish National Bank building in Copenhagen, and the Danish embassy in London. But due to his sudden death in 1971, these were completed by Dissing + Weitling, founded by Jacobsen’s former key employees Hans Dissing and Otto Weitling.
