The vases are also known as Savoy, a name that refers to a restaurant of the same name that opened in 1937 in Helsinki. The new luxury restaurant was furnished with design pieces by Alvar Aalto and his wife Aino Aalto. However, the iconic collection was originally created for the prestigious Karhula Iittala competition. As the winning design, it was then presented for the first time at the Paris World Fair in 1937.
The Aalto vase collection is a symbol of the timeless quality of Scandinavian design. The vases and candleholders are mouthblown from glass that is colored in the mass with beautiful colored pigments. The production involves 7 people in a total of 12 production stages, therefore each of the vases is unique.
