The delicate Awa lamp design, created by the Japanese designer Fumie Shibata for a premium Czech brand Brokis, was inspired by the idea of soft glass that has retained its shape after being inflated. "Awa" is used in Japanese to describe an air bubble trapped in a liquid. Fumie Shibata wanted to create lighting fixtures that, when viewed from below, create the impression of a light air ball floating gently in space. The wooden or metal parts then serve as "stoppers" keeping the air from escaping.
