The chair is made of thin metal wire in combination with perforated sheet metal and is considered the best example of the high-tech product of the 1970s thanks to its industrial form and high-precision steel construction .
"The X-Line Chair is one of the few high-tech objects to come out of Denmark, but in many ways it is one of the most intelligent designs our country has ever produced. It's so minimalist and thoughtful," says Rolf Hay, co-founder of Danish brand HAY, which bought the distribution and manufacturing rights to the chair from Magnus Olesen.
High-tech direction in the 1970s
Niels Jørgen Haugesen, who also gained valuable experience in the 1960s through his collaboration with Arne Jacobsen, famously embraced a revolutionary new approach to design in the 1970s. This emphasised engineering processes and ever greater revelation of the structures. In this spirit, Niels Jorgen Haugesen rethought his design from the ground up, creating a chair with a characteristic X-shape that provides strength, lightness and flexibility without hiding or unnecessarily complicating anything.
Linking the HAY philosophy with the X-line chair
In addition to its unique minimalist design, the X-line chair has a very low material consumption in production. This means not only an important low carbon footprint, but also the ability to offer it at a reasonable price.
