Aino Mandelin was born in 1894 in Helsinki. She studied at the Helsinki Institute of Technology, where she also completed her studies. She then worked for various architectural studios. In 1924, Alvar Aalto's office became one of them.

After a few months of work, Aino and Alvar became married. They spent their honeymoon in Italy, where all design enthusiasts went back then. Later, together with her husband and two others they founded the Artek brand. Due to their collaboration on several large projects, no one gave Aino with much credit for her work, even though she was involved in several absolutely essential works. At that time, society considered Aino only as his wife and helper.
